NHLBI Workshop - Opportunities and Challenges in the Genetics of COPD 2010:  An International COPD Genetics Conference Report

To facilitate the development of research into the identification of additional genetic risk factors for COPD, an international meeting of COPD genetics investigators was held on July 13-14, 2010 in Boston. The goals of the meeting were:

  • To review the current state of COPD genetics research
  • To discuss existing study populations for COPD genetics research throughout the world
  • To consider opportunities for collaborations between different COPD research groups through an International COPD Genetics Consortium
  • To recognize challenges in building COPD genetics collaborations and to discuss them openly
  • To develop a framework for future collaborative studies

NHLBI Workshop – Improving Outcomes for Pulmonary Vascular Disease

Recognizing the importance of improving lung health and disease, the NHLBI convened a workshop of multi-disciplinary expertise on August 11-12, 2011, to review the state of scientific knowledge forming the basis for current treatment of children and adults with pulmonary vascular diseases (PVD); identify current scientific opportunities in PVD research and how to capitalize on these opportunities; to prioritize new research directions that could affect the clinical course of PVD; and to make recommendations to the NHLBI on how to fill the identified gaps in clinical research.


NHLBI Workshop – Non-obstructive Chronic Bronchitis: A Syndrome in Need of Better Definition and Treatment

To explore opportunities for research in this area, the NHLBI convened a workshop of investigators in Bethesda, Maryland on June 23-24, 2011, to review available studies and to recommend future research leading to new management approaches for all forms of chronic bronchitis.

NHLBI Workshop – Genomic Medicine and Lung Diseases

The NHLBI convened a workshop on July 18-19, 2011, to discuss how global or systems approaches and omics technologies will contribute to the development of 21st century pulmonary medicine, and to evaluate the most promising opportunities for this next phase of genomics research most likely to yield clinical benefit.

NHLBI Workshop – NHLBI Working Group on Strategies to Optimize RBC Products

The NHLBI convened a working group on August 30-31, 2011, of external experts including transfusion medicine, hematology, and immunology research scientists, blood service executives and blood bank directors, as well as end users of transfusion including intensivists and trauma experts. The purpose of the meeting was to provide recommendations to the NHLBI that guide informed decisions on research objectives and priorities in the field of Transfusion Medicine with particular emphasis on the emerging questions related to the optimal storage of red blood cell products.
