NAVBO AT EB'95
NAVBO participated at Experimental Biology '95 as a guest society of ASIP April 9-13, 1995 in Atlanta. NAVBO's
presence at EB 95 was evident in a number of venues.
Scientific activities were initiated with the Blood Vessel Club, chaired this year by Mark Majesky. Recent breaking
presentations based on the theme of "Development of the Vessel Wall" were featured, with an equal emphasis
on emerging studies in both endothelial and smooth muscle cells. NAVBO co-sponsored two major symposia at EB '95,
"Genetically engineered animal models for the study of vascular disease" chaired by Michael Gimbrone, and "Viral
Activation of the Vessel Wall" chaired by David Hajjar and J McDougall. Both sessions were a great success. Addi-
tionally, NAVBO sponsored two poster-discussion session, "The biology of small vessels" chaired by Mary Gerritsen
and William Sessa and "Vascular Biology" chaired by David Gordon.
The NAVBO council, which meets semi-annually, met Sunday April 9. The NAVBO council voted to establish a
World Wide Web home page and a usenet discussion group on the internet to facilitate communication with the
vascular biology community. Nominations for council and president elect were made, and discussions of the IX Inter-
national Vascular Biology Meetings in Seattle and liasons with other societies considered. . Mary Gerritsen was
nominated by the Microcirculatory Society as the official liason to NAVBO. Official liasons with other societies are in
progress. Betsy Nabel presented progress made towards incorporation of NAVBO and establishment of tax-exempt
status for the organization.
Immediately following the Blood Vessel Club, the NAVBO business meeting was held. The dates and venue of the
IXth International Vascular Biology Meetings (Seattle WA, September 4-8, 1996) were announced. NAVBO also goes
electronic, with both a World Wide Web Home Page administered by Dan Mooradian, and a NAVBO newsgroup,
administered by Steve Schwarz, Dave Gordon and Valeri Kolpokav (see Internet News, this newsletter). Nominations
for new council members and president elect were announced and the treasurer's report presented to the member-
ship.
Ballots are being mailed out to the membership at the time of writing of this newsletter-look forward to
election results in the next issue.
Following the business meeting, a NAVBO reception offered the opportunity for members to network and meet with
members of council.
