Vision for NAVBO:
‘I like to think of NAVBO as a tangible vascular network – the members are the endothelial cells – sharing a common core function – but localized physically in different areas and specialized to perform a specific mission. Within this network, synergy is achieved by sending and/or receiving a flow of information with each other and by communicating with other types of non-endothelial cells.’
It is with the greatest honor that I enter this ballot for President of NAVBO. I have been a NAVBO member since 2007 when I was a postdoctoral fellow in Joyce Bischoff’s laboratory. As a young international fellow, I was fascinated by the welcoming atmosphere during my first Vascular Biology Meeting in Asilomar. Not only was I able to meet and connect with established investigators I knew only from papers, but I was also included in scientific discussions while receiving interesting questions and feedback that propelled my research project and moved forward my critical thinking. The collaborative spirit of the NAVBO community is unprecedented as it extends to all of the career stages and different environments including academia and industry.
My vision for NAVBO is to further its mission to connect scientists with interests in vascular biology and integrate with different experts in a friendly environment where scientists would feel free to share unpublished data and future ideas.
The goal is also to supply a hub for non-vascular expert students and investigators coming from different specialties. NAVBO will continue to provide tools and platforms (meetings, seminars, educational material, etc.) to promote their branching and sprouting into the vascular network! We will additionally extend the range of career advancement, informative sessions and roundtable discussions to include different career stages and non-academic job opportunities. I will work with NAVBO to organize and promote on-line and in person networking opportunities and to connect basic scientists with clinicians to further the much-needed translation of scientific discoveries into better patient care.
About myself: I was born in the north of Italy where I received my BS and PhD, at the University of Padova. I completed my postdoctoral training at Boston Children’s Hospital and obtained a faculty position at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2014. In my free time I enjoy swimming, cooking (eating as well!), and traveling with my family!
